Cheddar Gorge
Cheddar Gorge and caves are a must to explore and you can find stunning views over the somerset levels. Cheddar gorge is also home to many small shops and cheese makers. Cheddar has a beautiful village centre with many shops and historic buildings.
Glastonbury
The town of Glastonbury is on the main road that runs south from Bristol, a few miles south of Wells on the way to Yeovil. The ruined Glastonbury Abbey, which is open to visitors is at the centre of the town, to the east of town is Glastonbury Tor, with St Michael’s Tower at the top, is free to visit, and offers views across the town, the Isle of Avalon and beyond.
Dunster Castle
Set in fairytale English surroundings – think thatched cottages, multiple tea rooms, cobbled streets and sea views – this ancient turreted castle has been witness to some 1000 years of history from its Tor-top perch. A former motte and bailey castle, it’s now a country home under the care of the National Trust. Visitors can have a nosy inside the castle, explore the subtropical gardens, crypt and ghost exhibition, check out a Victorian reservoir and wander along to a working watermill and access numerous walks from the grounds, although check ahead to see what’s open when.
Exmoor National Park
Towering sea cliffs, high moors, tumbling streams and deep valleys that shelter our unique Atlantic Rain forest. On Exmoor it is still possible to find tranquillity and peace as well as rediscover your sense of adventure; to catch a glimpse of wild red deer, be amazed by dark skies full of stars and explore villages full of character and charm.
Wells Cathedral
Set in the medieval heart of England’s smallest city, and an easy journey from Bristol and Bath by car or public transport, Wells Cathedral was built between 1175 and 1490 and has been described as “the most poetic of the English Cathedrals." Wells is the earliest English Cathedral to be built in the Gothic style. The current building is a significant landmark in South West England, with an international reputation.
